Odyssey School’s CRCT Results Show Improvement
June 29, 2010
An article about Odyssey’s CRCT test scores:
Odyssey School, a state chartered special school in Newnan, recently reported gains in CRCT passing percentages over last year in a majority of areas, including 100% passage rates in four categories. Odyssey’s CRCT scores outpaced that of the Coweta County School System in 19 of 31 areas including 17 of 21 categories at the elementary school level. According to Andy Geeter, school director at Odyssey, “I think these results are indicative of the educational quality of our faculty and our programs.”
These scores reflect all test takers at the Newnan school, including special education students, but do not take into account state-mandated CRCT retest scores for 3rd and 5th grade students or students from the Georgia Cyber Academy (GCA), a separate program of Odyssey. Although part of the same charter and considered as one school by the state for purposes of AYP designation, budgeting and testing, Odyssey and GCA function operationally as different schools with different students, teachers, and curriculum.
Because the number of students in each grade at the school does not exceed 30 (25 in each middle school grade), an individual student not passing a portion of the CRCT affects the school’s overall passing rate in that grade for that test between 3.3-4.1 percentage points. Geeter explains that this situation can make test score passing percentages seem more extreme than they are in reality. “As an example, our third grade passage rate for social studies was 96.7%. This represents only one student not passing this section of the test, but that one student’s results lowered our overall passing rate by 3.3 percentage points.”
Passage rates were not as high at the middle school level however, a fact acknowledged by Geeter. ” In a number of ways, our scores at the middle school level were more reflective of a first or second year charter school,” a fact that makes sense he says when you consider that the school only began a middle school in the 2008-2009 school year and around 45% of the middle school students had not been at Odyssey the previous year.
Geeter continues, “Both of our middle school teachers are returning and we have added a strong math teacher who comes to us with several Teacher of the Year honors from his former school in North Carolina. With a high percentage of our middle school students returning and the added benefit of a longer school day (8:25 am-3:35 pm), I look forward to seeing significant gains next year in our middle school test results.”
Odyssey School has a few spots remaining for the 2010-2011 school year in 8th grade and short wait lists at several other grades.
